Thursday, August 28, 2025 LET'S BE SWEDISH FOR A DAY! Bishop Hill, IL
Explore the town created in 1846 by Swedish religious dissenters who left their birthplace for a new land where they could worship as they pleased. After Eric Janson was thrown into jail by the Swedish government for his beliefs, he and his followers pooled their resources and immigrated to the United States where they created a religious community at Bishop Hill. By sharing their property, working long hours, and living simply, they created a showplace town that brought many curious visitors.
We will begin our day with a guided tour around the town to learn more about Eric Janson and his followers. See the 1854 Steeple Building, the 1857 Blacksmith Building and the 1853 Colony Store! Then we will enjoy a traditional Swedish Lunch at PL Johnson’s. Lunch will include Swedish Meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and non-alcoholic drink.
Next, you will have time to explore the town on your own, venturing into the historic shops that line the main road. The Prairie Arts Center offers various demos during the week including broom making, weaving and pottery! Stop by the Colony Store for some old fashioned candy and Swedish souvenirs. Visit the Colony Church to see how locals lived after the settlement. This little village is chock full of history that’s waiting to be discovered!

FARMERS DELIGHTS!
Madison, WI
VISTA Club will be traveling to Madison, Wisconsin to experience the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only Farmers’ Market in the country! All items sold here are produced by the members behind the tables, and no re-sale is allowed. This means when you visit the Dane County Farmers’ Market, you can truly get to know the people who grow and raise the food you are buying. With approximately 130 vendors attending every Saturday, the market offers meat, cheese, flowers, bakery items, plants and more. We will attend rain or shine, so be prepared for any type of weather! PLEASE NOTE: NOT ALL VENDORS ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS SO BRING SOME CASH WITH YOU JUST IN CASE. IF YOU PLAN TO PURCHASE ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE KEPT COLD, PLEASE BRING A SMALL COOLER ALONG ALSO!
After the market closes we will enjoy a guided tour of the Wisconsin State Capitol, located smack in the center of the market. The beautiful building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001 and a 1990 law prohibits any building within one mile of the capitol from being taller than the base of the columns surrounding and supporting the dome of the building.
Finally on our way home, we will stop for an early dinner at the unique Quivey’s Grove Homestead. John Mann moved to Fitchburg in 1855 and built the mansion and stable that is still on the property today. He traded timber from his property for stones from the neighboring quarry. At the same time the Mann estate was built, the first and most successful inn in the Fitchburg area was thriving -- Quivey's Grove. The concurrent development coupled with a grove of black walnut trees, maples, and elms account for the name Quivey's Grove today.
Joe Garton, a great cook, lover of historic places, and budding restauranteur first saw the John Mann house in 1979. He immediately envisioned the old buildings could serve as a new kind of restaurant, and it opened on May 23, 1980. Fourty-four years later, the setting still takes you back in time with American traditional antiques from the period, gardens to wander and buildings from the 19th century to admire and explore. Dinner choices include Schnitzel Hanerville (breaded and fried pork loin served with smashed red potatoes), Marxville Chicken (marinated chicken breast with portabella mushroom grilled and served with rice and vegetables) or Waunakee Whitefish (pretzel crusted Lake Superior whitefish fillets, served with fries). No need to pre-select meals for this trip!
Cost: $100 Per person
Fee includes: Transportation, capitol tour, dinner, all associated taxes and tips. Cancellations will be refunded only if we are able to fill your vacancy.
